Microsoft introduced VB.NET (Visual Basic .NET for Visual Basic Veterans) to replace its flagship language, VB6. Some believe that deliberate purpose of introducing .NET was to propel demand for the yet to be reintroduced Classic VB, helping to retain Microsoft's market lead over Java.
