The WSS "60 Hive"

In the Mindsharp Summit for SharePoint Developers, I teach students how to exploit Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) and SharePoint Portal Server (SPS). But before we delve into things like creating custom Web Parts, Web Part properties, Web Part Tool Parts, and Event Sinks; we explore how SharePoint initializes sites using the underlying Site Definitions in the 60 Hive. I like to say that the 60 Hive is the starting place for everything SharePoint. At the very least, it is the basic building block upon which everything else in SharePoint is built.
I use the following image to explain how the 60 Hive is structured:

The Site Definitions are found in the subdirectories on the right.

Consequently, I've decided to name my blog: Todd Bleeker’s 60 Hive - my starting place for everything SharePoint. I hope to help other people understand aspects of SharePoint that I've had the opportunity to explore.

Todd,

This sounds like a great idea for a starting place for people to come learn about the insides of Sharepoint. I hope you plan to keep your blog updated frequently, so I'll be looking for your posts in my RSS reader.

I am looking forward to seeing what comes of this blog. I attended the Orlando SharePoint Summit last year (Feb. '04)...now since a year has passed, I will be able to take more away from blogs like yours and others in the SharePoint community.

Excellent posting. The internals of SharePoint need clear documentation such as yours, along with some basic roadmaps of customizing sites. I am the sole architect/developer for a large SP Portal Server 2003 project. I appreciate the structured walk through of this posting and wish that there were more examples like this out there on the web, rather than obscure web parts with poor documentation or the standard knee jerk reactions of "edit the page with FrontPage!". Thanks again for a great post.
