Here is a tool that purports to give you per-item level permissions in a document library. If you've worked with this, please post back, whether pro or con on this product. Thanks.

Hi Bill. It's not very secure - if you have WebDav access to the Document Library you can still see any items that you have supposedly been denied access to.
Nice tool, thnaks for the info EROL MVP SPS http://sharepointerol.blogspot.com/
Looks interesting. From the video it looks like they've modified the menu to add the permissions options, which then just launches their own app in the _layouts directory. Two problems I see with this tool (like any tool that does item level security). First it needs to rip through and update the site defs that are already there in order to get the new menu / views added. I consider that invasive as not only would it hit the STS and other stock sitedefs, it would hit my custom ones that I may be deploying updated versions of from my source base. Second as Eric pointed out, if you use the Explorer view or WebDAV to access the site it won't work as the permissions are only being applied through the web interface. Nice option, but I prefer to just wait until v3 where it's built in.
We bought 2 months ago and use it ,we are very happy!!
WSS 3.0 does have per-item security. I am working on a project to mirroring the site and document, but only can find the permission for site and list from the permission web service. Does anyone know how to obtain the permissions for folder or document ?
very good
Thank you!
